nehru and cabinet mission
an eminent historian, majumdar rightly comments, "unfortunately, at the critical moment, when a peaceful settlement of india's future was almost within sight, it was upset by some indiscreet utterances of pandit jawahar lal nehru. in 1937, his outright rejection of jinnah's offer of congress league coalition ministry ruined the last chances of hindu muslim settlement. his observation in 1947 destroyed the last chance - though a remote one - of a free united india." (from liaquat ali khan by prof. ziauddin ahmad - pp 50-51) the reference was to the cabinet mission plan which envisaged creation of three groups of states a. b, c. group b was to consist of punjab, nwfp and sindh; group c was to include assam and bengal. all other states were to be in group a.
