the great referral sanskrit dictionary
work on comprehensive sanskrit dictionary was started by deccan college in 1948. the project was extended from year to year. in 1978, committee headed by r p naik recommended that it be taken as a long term project without need of yearly sanctions. the recommendations were accepted . three volumes were published by 1980 and the dictionary reached up to letter अग
surprised to learn that by 2010 it had just reached upto letter अप
the reason stated was that just three persons are available for this job whereas there should have been twenty or more.
things seem to have improved after that. the latest position (as could be ascertained on internet in 2024) 35 volumes are now ready. the total number of volumes. the likely total number of volumes could not be ascertained.
(note – i was member of committee under r p naik. was director languages up to 1980. was presented the three volumes)
(latest – delhi sanskrit college has entered mou to digitize the dictionary)
